How can I check/set the IP address for my SecurStor 12i?

Read below for information on how to check and set the IP address on the SecurStor 12i.

Since the SecurStor 12i does not have an LCD, the IP address can be obtained by checking the DHCP server for the IP address 'pulled' by the SecurStor 12i or via the Com port (serial) interface. Click here, for instructions on connecting via the serial.

To view/change the IP address, via the serial interface, use the following instructions:

1. From the Main menu, select View and Edit Configuration Parameters. Press Enter.

2. Select Communications Parameters, press Enter.

3. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). This will display the MAC & IP addresses.

4. To change the IP address, press Enter.

5. Select Set IP Address, press Enter.

6. Select & Edit the IP address, NetMask and Gateway by pressing Enter and modifying. Once done with the changes, press ESC to submit the changes.

Note: To set the IP Address to DHCP, type DHCP in lieu of the IP address. Ensure the gateway and NetMask are correct.

RAID controller firmware upgrade over serial

How do I upgrade the firmware on my SecurStor 12i RAID controller over a serial connection?

First, you must obtain the appropriate firmware file from technical support for your model.

Shutdown all RAID disk access from the attached host(s). The safest course of action is to shutdown the host machine entirely. It is highly recommended you use an alternative machine (not the host) to do the firmware update. If that is not possible, and the host must be used for the update, then you need to ensure no RAID disk access traffic occurs from the host to the SecurStor 12i unit -- the best method to ensure this is to physically disconnect the host SCSI or FC cable.

You can download the latest HyperTerminal from here or just use the one built-in to Windows.

The defaults port settings are: Baud Rate = 38400, Data Bits = 8, Parity = None, Stop Bits = 1, Interface = VT100.

1. Halt all I/O activity to the RAID controller

2. Connect the serial cable and null-modem adapter to the RAID chassis and the RS232 DB9 serial port on your host machine. On the SecurStor 12i RAID side, the port looks like a small audio port, and is labelled COM. The null modem adapter sits between that cable and your host cable or computer, as shown below.

Serial cable connection

3. Load terminal software to the correct settings and open a connection through the serial port.

4. Press Ctrl-L to refresh the screen. Enter the RAID password to gain access. The default password is admin if you have not changed it.

5. Arow down to System Functions, select it and then choose Controller Maintenance, select it then choose the top option for Download firmware.

6. Using HyperTerminal's serial interface, select Transfer, Send File, locate the firmware file and then begin transfer. A Zmodem file transfer session will begin, and will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.

7. After the firmware upgrade is finished, the SecurStor 12i RAID system will Program Flash for about 1-2 minutes, indicated by a percentage complete counter on the top left of the screen.

8. Once that is complete, you can press Escape and exit back to the Main Menu, then select System Functions, Reset Controller. This will reboot the RAID controller, which will take approximately 2 minutes.

9. When the controller finishes initalizing, the menu interface will appear again. You may now safely resume host RAID traffic.

RAID controller firmware upgrade with RAIDWatch software

How do I upgrade the firmware on my SecurStor 12i RAID controller using the web RAIDWatch connection?

First, you must obtain the appropriate firmware file from technical support for your model.

Shutdown all RAID disk access from the attached host(s). The safest course of action is to shutdown the host machine entirely. It is highly recommended you use an alternative machine (not the host) to do the firmware update. If that is not possible, and the host must be used for the update, then you need to ensure no RAID disk access traffic occurs from the host to the SecurStor 12i unit -- the best method to ensure this is to physically disconnect the host SCSI or FC cable.

Open RAIDWatch using a web browser pointing to the IP address of the SecurStor 12i RAID system. RAIDWatch will launch the Java based interface after a few moments. It will prompt you to install the latest version of Sun Java if you do not already have it running -- and it is required to run Sun Java to access RAIDWatch.

Enter the appropriate RAID controller password when prompted (the default is admin if you have not changed it). Select the appropriate SecurStor 12i system from the menu listing on the left side, double clicking on the "Ethernet" connection.

1. Click the Configuration button on the right side of the page.

2. Click the tab at the top labeled "Controller". Then click the "Operations" sub-tab underneath that.

3. Click the "Download" tab and select the radio button for "Download firmware" only, then hit OK button at the bottom of the page.

4. Browse to the firmware file, select it and hit OK to start the file transfer. The transfer will take approximately one minute and will show "Download in progress".

5. When the download has completed, a new window will pop-up and say "You may reset the controller". Hit OK.

6. A new window will pop-up confirming you wish to reboot the controller now, hit OK to proceed. The RAID controller will reboot which will take approximately 2 minutes.

7. You will then need to close RAIDWatch and wait for the RAID controller to come back on-line. You can then re-open the web interface and confirm the RAID controller is responding.

8. When the controller finishes initalizing, you may safely resume host RAID traffic.

If you have any questions please contact support before attempting to perform a firmware upgrade. To contact support, you can click here.

Setting up a serial RS232 connection to the RAID controller

What is needed and how to setup a serial connection to the SecurStor 12i RAID controller:

Included with the SecurStor 12i RAID components was a null modem adapter and a DB9 to audio jack cable. The audio jack cable connects to COM 1 on the back of the SecurStor 12i RAID controller. The null modem adapter is placed in-between the audio jack cable and your host DB9 cable or interface, as shown below.

Serial Cable connection

Use any standard serial program, such as HyperTerminal built-in to Microsoft Windows. Open a connection with the following settings:

Baud rate: 38400, Stop Bits: 1, Data Bits: 8, Parity: None, Flow Control: None, Terminal Emulation: VT100.

The key combination Control-L will redraw the screen. Select VT100 mode from the menu and press enter to enter the RAID controller Main Menu.

Setting up a telnet network connection to the RAID controller

For information on how to access the unit via the network connection look here: Access network connection

1. Telnet to the IP address of the RAID controller, such as "telnet 192.168.252.25".

2. Enter the RAID controller password (the default password is admin if you have not changed it).

3. Press Control-L to refresh the screen. Select VT100 emulation and press enter.

Setting up a RAIDWatch network connection to the RAID controller

For information on how to access the unit via the network connection look here: Access network connection

1. Using a web browser, browse to the IP address of the RAID controller. You must be running Sun Java for the interface to properly load. You will be prompted to install Sun Java if you do not have it running already, or you can download from http://java.sun.com.

2. Enter the RAID controller password (the default password is admin if you have not changed it).

3. The RAIDWatch java applet will open. Select the SecurStor 12i RAID system on the left pane and double click the "Ethernet" box.

4. Enter the password (default is admin) to the RAID controller.

Providing Server information

How do I provide Tech Support with the necessary server information?

EMD Support may request that you send information which will help us to analyze the current state of your SecurStor 12i system. If this is the case, please follow these instructions:

First connect via serial or telnet to the SecurStor 12i (information on how to found here: "Telnet" and here "Serial"), and then send a screenshot of each of the following pages:

1. view and edit Logical drives

2. view and edit logical Volumes (if applicable)

3. view and edit Host luns (all active channels/IDs - hit enter to show details)

4. view and edit Drives (2-3 pages)

5. view and edit channels (2-3 pages)

6. view and edit Peripheral devices - View Peripheral Device Status

7. view system Information

8. view and edit Event logs (all applicable pages)

Once you have the screenshots please compress the files and send to support in reply to your trouble ticket e-mail.
