Overview:

The DataNAS Director is a network attached storage solution that can function as a stand-alone NAS Filer with up-to 4TB capacity per unit, or it can become a NAS header/gateway for up-to 22TB capacity total by attaching up-to 10 additional NAS RAID add-on volumes to the header.   This unique feature is called SmartExtend and is based on iSCSI storage over IP technology.

There are easy file sharing options for data storage management along with many features for data security, and data backup / disaster recovery.

Data Storage / File Sharing:

File sharing has never been easier.

The powerful yet easy-to-use graphical web interface makes it a snap to create and maintain shares and security. Or use native operating system tools like Windows Explorer or the Unix/Linux command line to modify file security, it's all supported with no compatibility headaches to worry about. Our core focus is file sharing, so our specially designed interface removes all the unnecessary options that just get in the way compared to configuring a complete operating system like Windows.

SmartExtend (iSCSI technology connectivity):

Although DataNAS Director has up-to 4TB of storage capacity on its own, you can extend up-to 22TB capacity with the add-on multiple NAS modules. With SmartExtend feature, DataNAS Director becomes the “Initiator” and acts as a gateway and file server for controlling the central management interface of these add-on modules. The NAS add-on storage modules will give up their management control to the DataNAS Director. This creates a unified point for the administrator management and a single user source for file sharing of the storage modules on DataNAS Director.

When a user wishes to access a file they need not know where that file resides (on which NAS add-on module). Instead the user can see files and access all NAS add-on modules simultaneously from a single share point or namespace on DataNAS Director. Of course this can be changed if the administrator desires an alternative configuration.

The DataNAS Director's internal hard drives remain active and are shared out to users, while the hard drives residing in the SmartExtend add-on modules are controlled and managed from the DataNAS Director.

DataNAS Director features available RAID protection so that if a hard drive were to fail, your data remains intact and on-line. You can even increase the disk capacity as your needs grow, and do it on-the-fly without restarting the server or disrupting file access.

Easily create several share points and set granular security for the share, folder, and file level using native operating system tools like Microsoft Windows Explorer "right-click, set permissions" dialog box. Or use the built-in admin web interface instead if you prefer.

Anti-Virus real-time or scheduled scanning is included. Powered by Trend Micro (an industry leader), the AV engine runs directly on DataNAS Director for maximum performance, and includes free automatic virus pattern file subscription updates for life. Powering configuration settings such as scheduling, quarantine options, and administrator alerts are all included, free of charge.

Backup and Disaster Recovery :

You have many choices with DataNAS Director when it comes to data protection. Tapeless disk-to-disk backup, locally attached single or multi-drive tape library or autoloader, over-the-wire backup to an existing backup server like Legato Networker.

DataNAS Director features data archiving capabilities as a standard feature. This is helpful for those small projects such as an out of office presentation or a quick backup of a critical file that can fit on removable media.

Optionally attach an AIT, DAT, DLT, SDLT, LTO or DDS tape backup device, including an auto-loader or library, directly to DataNAS Director for optimum performance. A full task scheduler and advance backup and restore task criteria, event logging and more -- all features available in the DataNAS Director interface without having to rely on third party software.

With SmartSync and DataNAS Director, you are provided with an easy method for backing up critical data. First, you have advanced scheduling and task creation capabilities for backing up the data. Second, remote recovery of data is made easy using the built-in recovery option in the web interface. Third, SmartSync is compatible with any IP network, which gives you the capability to move data from one NAS to another NAS over the Internet, a private network, or your intranet. You can even store the backup data on a second volume on the same DataNAS Director.

SmartSync technology allows you to easily create a "master" and "slave" scenario, where the master server backups all data and configuration settings to the slave, and in the event the master fails, the slave can be easily brought on-line with little or no downtime or data loss.

Network Compatibility:

Windows 9x to 2003, appearing as a Windows File Server to network users and performing Domain or Active Directory authentication via your domain controllers. In Unix/Linux environments, NIS support is available, or create local user and group accounts. For Macintosh users, authenticate against your Windows Domain Controller, or create local user and group accounts right on DataNAS Director. No matter which network environment you have, DataNAS Director is designed to integrate with it and work seamlessly.
