Storage 101: Things to Know Before You Buy a Storage Solution

Part I
Whether your company’s network storage was purchased during the Reagan Administration or your company is growing along with your storage needs, you’ve decided it’s time for an upgrade. But with so many choices available, how do you find the right solution? It’s not as daunting as it might appear, if you keep these basic pointers in mind.

1. Be aware of your company’s needs. Too much storage can be as much trouble for your business as too little. Determine what you want to accomplish with your storage solution, then go from there.
   
   
2. Know what kind of storage solution you already have. Even if you don’t speak all the technical jargon, you should still know the model number whether your solution uses tapes, floppies, or hard drives, and how many tape or drive slots it contains.
   
   
3. Be able to describe the problems you are currently having. It also helps to know what your company has already done to resolve these problems and how well they worked.
   
   
4. Be aware of your corporate environment. How big is your company? Do you have an IT department or a network administrator? What sort of work does your company do? Do you have multiple locations? Think of it like buying a car — you wouldn’t buy a Honda Civic for off-roading, or a Mini Cooper to transport a family of five. Likewise, understanding your company’s environment will guide you in buying a solution that is both high quality and appropriate for your firm.
